ASTHMA
Asthma is a chronic and sometimes life threatening respiratory disease that inflames and narrows the airways; the tubes which carry air into and out of the lungs. With the airways inflammed, they become very sensitive and tend to react strongly to certain inhaled substances. When airways react, the muscles around them tighten, causing less air flow to the lungs. In addition, cells in the airway may make more mucus than normal. Mucus is a sticky thick liquid which can further narrow the airways. Although it affects people of all ages, asthma usually starts in childhood and mostly continues through life. In the United States alone, an estimate of over 22 million people suffer from asthma.
